DAY 18 - Custer, South Dakota and Mt. Rushmore
We woke up at 7:00 this morning after having dreams of being cowboys and started to make our way out of Wyoming (on the bus and van, not on horses). Begging for our muffins, the bus riders answered trivia to to get our yummy breakfast. After three hours of driving and a long construction stop, everyone rushed to the bathrooms and ate free ice cream “samples” at the gas station. We drove through many small towns, one with a population of only 74!
Ready for lunch, we had delicious lunch of buffalo chicken wraps, popcorn, and doughnuts, while Tucker enjoyed Jack Jack’s deodorant. He shared a lovely story about once licking deodorant when he was little (or at least we hope it was then). We stopped at Walmart so the cooks could buy their next meals. After the stop, it became very clear that Wyoming is “so Wyoming”. Kylie stole muffins from the van for an extra snack, then slept it all off for the rest of the ride. After driving a little while longer into South Dakota, we stopped at a park in Custer. Each group began learning a dance to compete in tomorrow. The Happys will obviously win with Harrison and his dance moves (all thanks to Jack Jack). Before heading to Mount Rushmore, our highlight of the day, we had a dinner of chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, and green beans. Elliot, the Grill Master, had a cup of milk and ground nuggets in addition to his gourmet meal tonight. For our hunger games today, two people from each group had a race to be able to eat first. The Grumpies won, they obviously cheated, so they got to eat first.
After dinner, we dropped the trailer off at the Custer Log Cabin YMCA (and yes, it is an actual log cabin!) before heading to Mount Rushmore. We arrived with the four presidents making the same face that everyone does when they look at our large group and took a few pictures before heading to explore. We visited the gift shop to buy shirts and souvenirs and the ice cream store to get extra sugar for our drive back to the log cabin that is our home for the night. The Grumpies unpacked the bus and we set up our belongings inside the gym. As we are writing this, we are watching a game of basketball that includes many airballs and “skills” being shown off. As people began to take cold showers, the girls bathroom started to flood as the showers would not stop. Olivia quickly came in to save the day and fixed it super fast. We are now headed to bed, I mean the floor, for a little rest before our early wake up tomorrow.
